Data & methodology
Retrieved October 25, 2026. This edition shows full fiscal years 2021–2025. It is a historical snapshot, not an automatically updated feed or coverage of the latest quarter.
Sources and selection
We use US-GAAP facts from the SEC Company Facts XBRL API at data.sec.gov. Annual values are selected by company, fiscal period end year, a 330–380 day duration and Form 10-K. For each year, we select values from the latest available filing as of the retrieval date. Historical figures may therefore reflect later restatements. This is not a point-in-time backtesting dataset.

Units and comparisons
Amounts are shown in U.S. dollars, in billions (B = $1 billion), generally rounded to one decimal place. Calculations use the underlying unrounded values. Apple, Microsoft and Alphabet have different fiscal year ends. 52/53-week years, acquisitions, taxes and accounting differences can affect comparisons.
S&P 500 and sector forward P/E
The index valuation page uses the Forward 12M P/E Ratio: Sector Level table in FactSet Earnings Insight. Forward P/E and both historical averages come from the same issue. We check the source daily and publish a new snapshot only when verified report data changes. The report date and the underlying data cutoff are distinct; missing cutoffs remain undisclosed. Relative deviation is (forward P/E / historical average − 1) × 100%.
Valuation lab
Scenario price = your EPS × your P/E. Margin-of-safety price = scenario price × (1 − margin of safety). Reference price vs. scenario = (your reference share price / scenario price − 1) × 100%. Defaults are illustrative and do not represent quotes or forecasts for any company. The calculator does not assess whether the assumed earnings are sustainable.
